A fourth place finish for Emirates Desert Championship Round Two

Dubai, UAE, 15 November 2016:  Dubai Autodrome’s Ryan Trutch got back into the sand to compete in Round Two of the Emirates Desert Championship (EDC) last weekend (11 November).

Organised by the Automobile & Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE) and Emirates Motor Sport Federation (EMSF) the event was held in Al Lahbab, on the Dubai/Hatta road.  The two hour event attracted 85 motocross riders, 14 buggies and a handful of rally cars.  The bikes competed on a 20 kilometre long course and the four wheel vehicles competed on a separate 14 kilometre course.

Ryan returned to off-road racing in his newly branded Polaris RZR 1000, alongside his MXDubai team mate Stefan Cudby.  The Polaris was in less-than-perfect condition after a massive rollover in Round One that left the vehicle damaged.  Caution would be required to bring home the HCR Racing equipped buggy unscathed and earn a respectable finish.

The local Polaris Racing Team, supported by the local Polaris dealer SSE, with drivers Omar Sawan and Ahmed Al Maqoodi set an early quick pace, soon overtaking a cautious Trutch.

Ryan’s Polaris then experienced a drive belt failure on lap five (of ten) that cost several minutes and another two positions.  After getting the buggy up and running again he chased down the leaders but it was not enough to overhaul the top three.

MXDubai team mate Stefan also suffered the same mechanical issue of the drive belt breaking—not once but twice!   Without another spare belt his race was done and Cudby was forced to retire in his first outing in the EDC.  His pace was good enough for a mid-field finish but he will have to wait until the next round to finish in the points.

Trutch was content to bring home his buggy in one piece, snagging a solid fourth place finish for the day and enough points to move to the top of the championship table.  He now leads by just two points over Tom Bell and is nine points clear of third place Abdulaziz Al Balooshi.

Ryan commented afterwards, “It was quite a tough race toady but I’m happy with the result which puts me at the top of the championship table with three races still left in the season.”

The next round of the Emirates Desert Championship will take place on 20 January 2017.
