The new season of the Sodi W-Series got underway on the first race weekend of the 2012 season at the Kartdrome. As is becoming customary, big field featuring the best UAE based leisure karting drivers gathered to battle it out in two sprint races for each category: SWS Master Cup and SWS Star Cup.

In the SWS Master Cup, Rami Azzam won the first race after edging away from his rivals battling for second place which included the likes of reigning champion Rami Joudi, perpetual front runner Sam Zian, Paul Chatenay and Khalid Al Mutawaa, who was making a welcome return to racing after over two years out of action. Behind Azzam, Zian managed second place from Rami Joudi in third.

Race two witnessed a five way battle to the finish line with Chatenay snatching the lead on the final lap from Zian who ended second again and Hussai Umid Ali claiming third and Azzam fourth.

Azzam said, “It was good to win the first race and the second race was brilliant, six of us battling for position. It was great fun and anyone could have won. I will be back for the next one.”

Chatenay said after his win, “It was a really fun race. I made a couple of moves and finally on the last lap I managed to get through. It was a clean race and good to win this one.”

In the Star Cup Philippe Valenza gave an impressive performance to win both races by a fair margin with Atef Barwani taking second place in both races. Saeed Bin Towq was third in race one, followed by Karim Morgan, Talal Al Jasmi and Hadi Al Baloushi.

Behind Valenza and Barwani in race two was Morgan who was followed across the finish line by Tom Soubiron, Ashraf Raza and Bin Towq sixth.

One of the features of both races, as in most Star Cup races held at the Kartdrome, was close racing all the way down the field.

The next round of DAMC Karting Championship and SWS Sprint Races takes place at the Kartdrome on 24 February.
