Following a thrilling and somewhat chaotic testing and practice session on Thursday evening , which saw several cars damaged in high speed incidents and remarkable all night work by the mechanics to get the cars repaired, Bassam Kronfli and Raed Hassan driving their Radical SR8 romped away to win both Radical Cup races held at the Yas Marina Circuit. In the more hotly contested Radical SR 3 class, Tony Wells and James Littlejohn were the class act and also scored wins in both races.
Whilst the two cars dominated both races in their respective classes, there were tightly fought contests throughout the field. In race one Perry Johansson the Swedish driver from Qatar recovered from a very poor start to catch and pass the new driver pairing of Hassan Dargahi and well known local driver Tarek Elgammal in the final few laps to secure second place in the SR3 class.
Race two saw Johansson repeat his second place but this time having to fend off strong competition from local driver Juma Al Dhaheri and Qatari Abdulrahman Al Thani. Further back in the field, newcomer to the Series, the experienced Dutch driver Rob Frijns racing a Radical for the first time had an exciting and closely fought race with AUH Motorsports driver Sean Stevens until spinning out of contention in the final stages.
At the Awards ceremony after the final race, Carl Rolaston, Managing Director of AUH Motorsports, the Radical Cup promoters announced the establishment of a new trophy to be awarded in the UAE Radical Cup Series to commemorate the life of popular local driver Christophe Hissette. Jean Louis Hissette, Christophe’s father , said, “Christophe lived life to the full and whether racing cars or karts he was always trying to achieve the perfect lap. This award will therefore be awarded annually to the UAE registered driver that achieves the most number of fastest race laps in the Radical Cup Series.”
